Having the other major systems, this one was the last one I needed to complete my collection and let me tell you, it's a beautiful piece of equipment. The only downside is that they've disabled PS2 game playback. Apparently, they'll release a patch soon so you can still play PS2 games, but of course will cost you additional dollars. Ive had the PS3 for about 6 months and love nearly everything about it. I researched this for a long time before i purchased it and bought this over the 360 because i wanted the Blu-ray. I have had 2 Xbox 360's in the past and didn't have a problem with them i just felt like something new.
I have enjoyed the PS3 on my new 1080p Sharp TV and think it looks amazing. I had the 360 hooked up to SD TV's Mostly and at some points a 60 inch 720p. I don't have much to say about the difference because there different tv's and one is much older then the other. I think the blue tooth is nice and enjoy the extra's.
If you are trying to decide between the 2 i would suggest looking at exclusive games and everything you want it for because the cheaper x-box can add up to more then a PS3 with the xbox gold and a wireless adapter. Get more detail about PlayStation 3 80GB.

This is the best console you can buy - if you are comparing this PS3 with the rest (xbox, wii, etc.), stop right now and buy the PS3.
It seems the biggest issue reviewers have is with the backward compatibility to play PS2 games. Well, buy a PS2 console (super cheap right now) if you want to play the old standard of games. The PS3 is for the new games, which blow away anything prior!
With this out of the way, there is no reason to buy the larger drive PS3 - you can always add-on USB ports (with usb hub), memory readers and larger HDDs (if you ever need them to begin with), save yourself $100 and get the 80GB PS3.
It's obvious most will compare the PS3 with the Xbox Pro, let me tell you, there is no comparison. Recently I decided to buy the xbox just so I can play Gears fo Wars 2, but after my own comparison, I decided against it and will simply wait for it to come out on PC.
This is what you will NOT get if you buy the Xbox instead:
- wireless adapter: Like it's 1993, Xbox does not come with wireless adapter, instead you'd have to buy it as an add-on, which costs $100. This alone was the deal-breaker for me - I am not paying $100 for wireless adapter in 2009! For me it's not the price but the principle. Get with the program, my toaster has wireless already. Instead, it comes with a network cable, like anyone keeps their router in the living room?!? You buy the Xbox pro with the wireless adapter and the price advantage is already gone, not to mention you'll have another device clustering your entertainment center. And I bought my PS3 on Xmas sale for $299, thus Xbox would be more expensive.
- Blu Ray: PS3 is still the standard for Blu-Ray player, unless you want to fork out $500 for the Oppo player alone. What do you get with Xbox - a DVD player. I don't think so.
- Color: This could be a problem for many. All my living room electronics are black (Duh!), yet if you want a black Xbox you'd have to go with the $400 120GB model. The Xbox Pro is white only, which would stick out like a sore thumb in your living room.
These are the 3 main points one should consider when comparing the Xbox with the PS3. For me, the few game titles are not incentive enough to forgo the many features I get with the PS3.

The PS3 has definately proven we are in a new age of entertainment. The graphics alone on HD are worth the price. The game content and attention to detail is much improved & in my opinion better than what other consoles can offer. Some say it costs too much, but take into consideration that the PS3 is also a Blue Ray player and will upconvert standard dvd titles to 1080P. You get updates for your console via internet using a home PC w/ a disc or flash drive and may also use a Wi-Fi connection or just hook it directly to an ethernet cord. The process is very simple and FREE. I would also like to note that the PS3 Network and connection to the internet is completely free to use. Xbox charges for internet connection to they're network. You may purchase content from the PS3 Network and they also have a vast list of free items such as backgrounds and themes. The load times in games is much faster than other consoles that will ease the minds of the impatient. You may store MP3's, Movies, Pictures as well as some other content on the console, so as you can see this is much, much more than just a gaming console and I believe that you will be more than happy with the multiple functions it provides for the price.
I do however rate this a 4.5 just for some minor issues. To start the manuals that come with it are not very detailed at all which may be an issue for those new to newer technology. Some extra hardware you buy seperately are priced a little high such as an extra Dual Shock Controller ect. Also, it is not backward compatible anymore. They do not have them in production anymore so if someone has told you the 160GB is, it is not! You will either have to buy an older system that's used from Gamestop or some other service to play the PS2 games. On the plus side PS2's prices are at a all time low now.
NOTES:
It will play reg Playstation games for those of you who still own the clssics.
Do NOT fall for buying a 50$-150$ HDMI cord claiming it is better. As long as it is 1.3 it will provide the exact same quality. I personally purchased one here on amazon with my order for 19 cents plus a couple dollars shipping. You will not find any cheaper.
High speed internet connection srongly advised for those of you wishing to update your system.
For online game play do NOT use sattelite Internet Providers such as Blue Sky. You will have extreme lag and it is virtually impossible to host your own game.
So, there you have it. Everything I can think of to consider. I say it is definately worth the money, and if you have kids it will keep them happy for a long time. I hope this has helped your decision.

I'm having a lot of fun with the console, it works perfectly and has many interesting features, such as streaming content from my PC using my internal Wireless LAN. I've been playing Metal Gear Solid 4, Soul Calibur 4, and Ratchet & Clank future on it. as well as some PSN titles. and they're all great.

The PS3 is an expensive console, and there's no getting around that. If you're held back by a tight budget, don't buy this! But if you have several hundred dollars you're willing to invest in what will become an integral part of your home entertainment system, the PS3 is probably the best of the three next-gen consoles to buy.
Before I continue, I want to stress that for family fun, motion-detection, etc, the Wii is probably the best bet, while for hardcore gamers that are obsessed with Halo, the Xbox 360 is probably the best. The PS3 is not completely perfect. But for anyone who wants an impressive video game system, multimedia hub, and Blu-Ray player all in one package, the PS3 will become your new best friend.
I can honestly say I use the PS3 almost every day, although I don't play many video games! I use it primarily for its multimedia...it turns your TV into a jukebox, photo album, or movie center with relative ease. How cool is it to have all your things organized in one easy-to-access place? How about surfing the web on your TV wirelessly? I really can't imagine myself without the PS3 now. Plus the games are pretty sweet, too!
PROS:
Multimedia Center - Have all your pictures, movies, and music on your TV
BLU-RAY - High-definition is really cool!
Fun games - While there's no Mario or Halo, there is a wide variety of games in many different genres that are bound to suit your interests
CONS:
Cost - When I bought it last year, it was cheaper to buy a PS3 than a
stand-alone Blu-Ray player. That's no longer the case. That being said, it's still a good deal
Lack of Backwards Compatibility - A really sneaky move on the part of Sony! Annoying you can't play your PS2 games (although on older PS3 models you could!), they purposefully took this feature out. Although still upset with that, I still love my PS3
In conclusion, if you have the money, go for it. If money is tight, go with the PS2 which is a really affordable solution at only $99 and has a large library. The Wii is a lot of fun, but won't offer much in the way of graphics; the Xbox is cool, but noisy and doesn't offer as much as the PS3 in the way of multimedia. While Sony gambled on Blu-Ray and ultimately won the format war, Microsoft bet on HD-DVD (which is being dropped).

Regardless of what happens in the console wars, the PS3 is an impressive piece of machinery. If you're looking for a Blu-Ray player, this is a great option even if you never play games on it.
I bought this for both gaming and movies, and I bought this model because I didn't think I wanted PS2 compatibility. Turns out, I was wrong - there's an impressive collection of PS2 titles available out there, and this machine can't even read the disc.
If you're a gamer, get a PS2-compatible version, if for no other reason than some evening, some buddy of yours is going to bring a great PS2 game over and you'll want to be able to check it out.Get more detail about PlayStation 3 80GB.

I ordered a used 80gb ps3 for only $[...] incl shipping and was expecting to have a problem with it. On the contrary, the system came like new condition with not one, but TWO wireless controllers AND a HDMI cable to boot! I was pleasantly surprised with this great deal. I also ordered unreal tournament, gta4, little big planet, and resistance2 used via amazon and am very impressed by the quality of these games. i recently bought a 32" samsung 1080p hdtv for the bedroom in which the ps3 is hooked up to and the picture quality of blu-ray and the games is simply fantastic! the online experience is also great albeit a little difficult when competing with other players via deathmatch with gta4 and resistance2. i couldnt get online with unreal tournament for some reason but the single player is just fine. all in all, i would strongly recommend getting the ps3 if you enjoy modern interactive entertainment and blu-ray movies!Get more detail about PlayStation 3 80GB.

I recently purchased a standalone blue ray unit and it was loaded with the common problems for such devices.
- slow load times
- questionable picture quality
- limited customization options
Needless to say I took it back and started doing the research for replacement. One thing that I noticed was that in all of the reviews for the best blu-ray players was that the PS3 was always in the list. Sometimes it was at the top sometimes it was at the bottom but it was always listed. Digging into the PS3 specs i thought I would give it a try.
I got it today and after 2min of set up I was watching my first blu-ray movie on it. I spent another 10-15 min adjusting the display and audio setting to match my hardware configuration and I am blown away by the quality of picture and sound. Better yet when I put in the movie for the first time it loaded in seconds instead of the 1-2min I was used to on the old player.
In summary the reviews are right to make sure that the PS3 is in the list of the top 10 blu-ray players. Personally I find that it loads fast, looks great, and had plenty of customization options to match your video and audio hardware requirements.
Note: I will probably never own a game for this system and I am pleased as punch because I have a great blu-ray player.. Get more detail about PlayStation 3 80GB.

Well I have had all 3 systems at a time. Now I have a PS3 and Xbox 360. I love them both dearly but if it comes down to a multiplatform game, then I just have to go with my Xbox. The Xbox just has more gaming appeal in the end and better online play because of Xbox Live. PS3 is great though, I rent Blu-Ray movies all the time and thats when I use my PS3 the most. I do have PS3 exclusive games like Metal Gear Solid 4, Little Big Planet, Killzone 2 and etc. Which I love all of those games but it just seems like the PS3 isnt as dedicated when it comes to gaming.
It has so many features that the XBox doesnt have. Such as Blu-Ray, Internet Browser, and some of the earlier models have full backwards compatibility with PS1/2 games. The PS3 is pretty much a computer and it has great features and great games but it cant match up to the games that are out on 360 though. Thats just my opion though, some people really prefer PS3 games. PS3's home is a really cool feature, You can explore the PS3 world with different themes from various games. Which is really cool because you can see and interact with everyone else that is exploring Home as well.
PS3 is a great system and I would recommend it to anyone as it is the premier system with the best features and is the most advanced gaming system to date(Other than PC's of course). What PS3 patrons and potentials must realize is that the PS3 (as you already may have known) is the best blu-ray player on the market since conception to date.
Not to mention, the PS3 (as you also may have already known) plays, you guessed it, video games. At 720p, 1080i, and 1080p, depending on the game, and PS3 uses a HDMI interface, a fiber optic audio output, wireless USB controllers, etc to the superior technology the X360 does not possess.
No offense to the X360 because I also have one and enjoy it very much. But you CANNOT compare the two in terms of technology. Voice your opinion, but stick with the facts. If you feel the need to compare the two, do your thing. But realize that when you compare a PS3 to a X360, the former soars far above the latter. Component cables offer only 480p on HD for the X360, and uses batteried wireless controllers and DVD data discs only for video games and movies.
The one thing X360 has on the PS3: The Halo franchise (which is why I have a X360).

I bought the PS3 mainly to watch blue ray movies,and there was mostly good reviews at the time. Plus, with the ability to play games I thought the PS3 was versatile and therefor the way to go. The machine worked great and I used it on average about 3 hours per week.
However, after about 15 months the PS3 would no longer read any of the blue ray discs or PS3 games. I did an internet search on the problem and found thousands of web pages of people having problems with the PS3 machine's failure to read disks. Its funny that everyone's problem happened around the same age of the machine. There are some who say the issue happened after downloading a software upgrade. I often downloaded the upgrades to keep my machine current so that it could play all the new disks that I bought.
The real kicker is that Sony is now charging people $150 dollars to fix the PS3 that fail to read disks. I don't understand how a company can charge people to fix a machine that is so poorly designed, and an issue that will just happen again at a later time.
Before you buy a PS3, do an internet search on "PS3 disk reading error". I have decided to purches a different name brand blue ray player. To me the name Sony is now synonymous with the word JUNK.Get more detail about PlayStation 3 80GB.

the PS3 is awesome until it breaks, which on average takes about a year from what I have read in the forums. Seeing that it breaks usually after warranty you have to pay another 150 dollars just to fix the problem. Sony is definitly ripping people off by charging 400 for the system now, and then 150 to fix it in a year. My NES still works from the 80's, explain that to me. I now own all 3 major next-gen consoles: The Xbox 360, the Wii, and now this one. I can honestly say I'm very impressed with it. Now is definitely the time to buy one I think. Wait another year, and the prices will only continue to drop. I finally broke down and bought the PS3 based on a bundle sale that only cost me around 400 bones for the console and a couple games.
I mentioned the above, because I think there are way too many fan-boys out there to skew people's decision what console to buy that still don't own any of these consoles, and are thinking about purchasing one. After using the PS3 for about a month now, it's become painfully obvious to me that neither the 360 or the PS3 is better than the other. Rather, it's a matter of opinion what you are going to use the console for.
For me there was only a couple of reasons to own the PS3: Blu-Ray and to play the Sony exclusive games. The PS3 is by far the best available Blu-Ray player in my opinion. It's designed to play just about any Blu-Ray disc, it can be updated with firmware updates, and thing connects wirelessly to the internet via a wireless router/modem. Blu-Ray looks and sounds phenomenal. If you have an HDTV, and you have the extra cash to spare for Blu-Ray, ... I don't know what you're waiting on then. There truly is an incredible difference in sound and picture between Blu-Ray and DVD. The Sony PS3 allows you to view Blu-Ray in all of its glory. With all the extra features and such, maneuvering through all the menus on the PS3 is a breeze, too.
The Sony exclusives for games isn't as compelling I think in comparison to the 360. However, that's all up to opinion. You'd have to play 'em to really grasp what you'd prefer. I'm more of a sports and action kind of gamer. I really love the 360 when it comes to Gears of War, Halo, and Mass Effect. The PS3 offers games such as Resistance, MLB: The Show, Killzone 2, and of course, Metal Gear Solid 4. It really comes down to what games tickle your fancy a little more. After you read all the reviews, and all of the hype, you really have to just play the games. I've played the games like Infamous and Little Big Planet. Those games have received great reviews, but I didn't like them too much. So my point is, if you're stuck on which system has the best games, my advice is to just play them and see for yourself. One fact remains about the PS3 exclusives, however, and that is that PS3 does provide the better graphics. The graphics card within the PS3 is produced by nVidia. If you're a PC geek like me, you know that nVidia's graphics cards have always been on the pricier side. There's a reason for that, and I'll just leave it at that.
The PS3 offers many things that make it better than the 360. The hard drive isn't proprietary, and easily exchangeable with a bigger hard drive. The controllers have built in rechargeable battery backs that charge via USB, and connect via Bluetooth. You can use a standard USB keyboard/mouse. Wireless capability is included with the PS3. It runs with a faster processor and graphics card. You can even install a separate operating system on the PS3. Browsing the web is surprisingly easy as well. It's not my browser of choice by any means, but it is 100% compatible with every website I've thrown at it. The PS3 is a Blu-Ray player, which makes it a gaming console, and your main movie player. The PS3 also up-converts your DVDs.
The PS3 is not perfect by any means, however. If you play online games you'll want to stay away from the PS3. Paying for the Xbox Live experience was always annoying to me, but after engaging in some online matches with Killzone 2, it has opened my eyes. The play is laggy and slow. Finding matches accourding to your skill level is also found wanting. The store and browsing for demos and such is done far better with Xbox's Live experience. The Xbox also offers instant streaming via Netflix, and PS3 doesn't. I find the controller for the PS3 a little uncomfortable compared to the Xbox. The buttons at times can be too sensitive, and the controller feels cramped at times. Bottom line for the controller, though, is that is strictly opinion. My wife's hands are much smaller than mine, and the controller for the PS3 to her is 100 million times better than the 360. So it just depends on what feels right to you.
The bottom line for the PS3 is that whatever your preferences are, those should dictate what system you'll choose if you can only choose one. There are many features available to you other than what I mentioned, and you can view those via Sony's website, or by browsing through the other reviews posted here. There's really no reason to not own a PS3. If you're looking to make the step towards Blu-Ray, you have a wireless network in your house, and you love solo gaming, then PS3 is probably for you. If online gaming is a big deal, and you're not really convinced that Blu-Ray is the way to go for you, than you should probably go the route of the Xbox 360. Last Saturday my Playstation 3 just suddenly stopped reading disc's. I first checked online to see if anyone had a quick fix. First thing I noticed was the sheer number of pages dedicated to PS3's disc drive failing. I called Sony to see what help I could get from them. I was informed by Sony that they were aware of the problem and the only solution was to have the broken drive replaced for $150 plus shipping. My 18 month old PS3 was out of warranty. Sony's position was,"Too bad, so sad"
I also own an Xbox 360 and was a victim of the "Red Ring of Death". Microsoft admitted their machine was faulty and gave me a reconditioned unit.
So apparently Sony just does not care if people ever buy their products again. My house is filled with Sony products. I will never buy another. I have always lived by the axiom,"When in doubt-buy Sony. It's often not the best, but it's always decent quality and reliable". Not anymore.
I plan on just junking the PS3 and buying a sub $150 blu-ray player. Obviously, not a Sony. Get more detail about PlayStation 3 80GB.

I used my 60GB every day for 2 1/2 years and it finally died. I had an extended warranty which paid me the original purchase price so I bought the 80GB to replace it. It was our main multimedia hub in the family room. I absolutely loved it. When it died I tried to make due with my 360 for multimedia for awhile and there is no comparison. I upgrade to a 320GB with my original and managed to back it up before it died.
Here are a few things that are different:
1. No Backward Compatibility, there are rumors this is coming. I was playing GoW II at the time so it's a bit dissapointing.
2. No SACD support. This is hardly mentioned but I have a small collection so again, this is dissapointing.
3. Less USB, no card readers. I plan to buy the Nyko USB port and memory stick reader. The memory stick is handy to quickly backup you saved games after you play them.
4. Runs cooler, less chips, 45nm chips.
5. Video you purchased will not work on the new PS3. It's basically DRM. I was told I could call Sony to get help in this area.
The 360 has been fine for games while my PS3 was gone but there is no comparison for movies, music, video, pictures, etc...Get more detail about PlayStation 3 80GB.

Anyone who has followed video games recently has heard of the past issues with the Xbox and their red ring of death, but what most don't know (I didn't until recently at least) is that the PS3 has the exact same problem, with a small catch, they charge you an additional 150 dollar fee to "fix" their shoddy system. The Playstation 3 is to my knowledge the most expensive console on the market, yet despite that cost you will find yourself with few unique games and a system that quite simply doesn't last.
I've had the PS3 for about 2 years, however almost never played it (lack of any interesting games). I then bought Rock Band 2 and actually started to use the system, and about 3 months later, the system begins to randomly freeze while I'm playing and force me to restart it. Within a couple days of that the problem has become freezing after 20 minutes of use and then not turning on again for an hour, until now where I can turn it on for maybe 5 minutes before just leaving it unplugged for the rest of the day.
While I can't vouch for what you will receive, I know that I personally will never buy a Sony product again.Get more detail about PlayStation 3 80GB.

I was a skeptic at first because of the price but i went ahead and bought one and have never regretted the purchase. The last console i bought was the genesis and then i grew up & stopped playing games, i bought the ps3 and Metal gear solid 4 and the gameplay just blew me away, i never saw a game that much fun just crawling on your belly and hiding in the shadows! Using tranquilizer darts to stealth take out enemies. If you love movies and especially love older movies like seventh seal, adventures of robin hood, quo vadis, how the west was won and new ones like apocalypto & the dark knight they all look really stunning with lots of detail and better than a movie theater.
The ps3 also has a web browser and Free access to online gameplay and store.
This is a best console you could buy,don't listen to anybody else who tells you otherwise. It adds so much value to your home from this one box. Your entire family and friends will all enjoy it. I highly recommend getting Metal Gear Solid 4 as one if not first video game, it really won me over so much, that i will happily buy another ps3 just to play it again! maybe i'll get one of those slims.....
