The Playstation 3 console probably provides the most entertainment value for your holiday shopping dollars this season. More than just a video game console, this system is also a top-notch Blu-Ray player. It plays regular DVDs as well as Blu-Ray. If you have a high definition TV, or are planning to get one in the future, the PS3 should be on your shopping list.

I own all of the major video game consoles, with the exception of the Nintendo Wii. The Playstation 3 gets the most usage because of its versatility. Not only does it play Blu-Ray and regular DVD, it is also capable of downloading movies and television shows from the Playstation Store. There are currently over 1,000 movies available for rent or download from the Playstation Store, and the inventory is growing at a very rapid rate. Even if you do not play games, you will find it hard to ever be bored if you have one of these consoles in your living room.

All three of the major consoles (PS3, XBox360, Wii, PS2) have big blockbuster games coming out in 2009. The PS3 lineup, just like the PS2's, promises to have something for everyone, from the casual gamers to the hardcore players. If you are looking to buy a console that the whole family can use, you will find it in the PS3.

This version of the PS3 will not play video games that were made for the PS2. This function, referred to as "backwards compatibility" is available only on the more expensive ($500) model of the PS3. If there is something to be criticized about this otherwise perfect console, it would have to be that, the lack of backwards compatibility. If backwards compatibility is important to you, then you will need to spend an additional $100 and purchase the PS3 model with that feature, like I did. For most people, I suspect that backwards compatibility may not be that important. It is important if you own a very large library of PS2 games. If not, then save the money and buy this model.

I have tried both models and eventually decided to get the one with backwards compatibility, but that is because I currently have a large inventory of older video games. For your information, I buy and sell video games for additional income. In other words, you might say I am a "pro". But most people will not demand that much from their consoles (I also own the Elite version of the XBox 360). This PS3 model should be more than what the typical user will ever need.

The Sony Playstation brand has always stood for good value right from the start. There are many games for the Playstation and the Playstation 2 that have actually gone up in value over the years. I have recently sold an original edition (black label, not Greatest Hits) of the Playstation game "Xenogears" for $120! Last year, I sold a copy of Final Fantasy 7 for about the same amount of money. I do believe that no other brand in video games hold their value, or in some cases appreciate in value, than the Playstation brand. You really cannot go wrong should you invest in the brand. I am hoping the same thing will happen with the PS3.

This model, like all other PS3 model, does not come with an HDMI cable. You will get the very best picture quality through HDMI. You should be able to pick up one of these cables from any of your major retailers for a small amount of money. I suggest that you use HDMI. The 80GB hard drive is very easy, and very cheap, to upgrade. It uses the same hard drive as most laptop computers.

This version of the PS3 console benefits from the latest Sony engineering. It actually operates cooler than the other model and uses less power. The backwards compatible model uses the older power supply, which consumes more power and runs a little bit warmer. All models of the PS3 operate flawlessly and they do not have a tendency to overheat. They have proven to be very solid and reliable. But it is always better to have a unit that operates as cool as possible and uses the least amount of electricity. The silent operation will also allow you to enjoy your Blu-Ray and DVDs even in a quiet room. Basically, this is the PS3 model that I would recommend for most people.

Should you buy a video game/entertainment console this Holiday season?

In my humble opinion, these entertainment consoles are the greatest entertainment value for your dollar during these tough economic times. If you compare the cost of a vacation, or the cost of taking your family out to the movies, you will see that the cost of a video game console compares very favorably. And these consoles (at least the Sony consoles) have the potential to last for a long time. My PS2 is eight years old and still runs perfectly. There is no reason not to expect the same durability from the PS3. And let's remember that this console plays movies. This console can really open up all kinds of entertainment possibilities for you and your family this Holiday season, and beyond. Get more detail about PlayStation 3 80GB.
